ULOVANE is Xhosa for CHAMELEON. The name “Chameleon” comes from the word “khamai “on the ground” + chthon “earth” + leon “lion”. The Eastern Cape Dwarf Chameleon (Bradypodion ventrale) depicted on the Ulovane Environmental Training logo truly represents the exceptional training and contribution Ulovane has made to the guiding industry.

Like a chameleon, Ulovane has, over the last 18 years, conducted its training in a focussed, steady, deliberate and courageous manner. And now, it is time to adapt and change. Ulovane is closing their current campus BUT they embark on an exciting new transformative journey and adventure…

“We understand that this news may come as a surprise, but please know that this decision was not taken lightly, we have had to make some difficult decisions, and unfortunately, this is one of them. Though bidding farewell to our beloved campus brings enormous sadness, we firmly believe that this marks the commencement of an exciting new phase for Ulovane”, says Candice Pretorius, co-owner of Ulovane.

Owners Candice and Schalk Pretorius are working diligently to explore new ideas, collaborations and opportunities to realign, redefine and restart. The Ulovane brand is trusted and well known, particularly in the Eastern Cape where graduate guides are snapped up by employers in the region.

Schalk Pretorius, co-owner states, “We will not be leaving the Eastern Cape and we want to make this very clear. We will remain committed to the continued growth and advancement of the Eastern Cape guiding community. This is our home and our family. The Eastern Cape may not have big trees, but we have massive hearts. As we look to the future, we are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. We are not leaving the industry, but instead, we are developing new projects and exploring exciting avenues to make an even bigger contribution to guiding and conservation in South Africa and the entire African continent”.

The Field Guides Association of Southern Africa commends Ulovane for always striving for excellence and the absolute dedication and commitment from their team over the years to facilitate training and development. FGASA thanks you Ulovane, and we look forward to the new chapter that lies ahead.

Ulovane’s new journey signifies the dawn of an inspiring and authentic era. They know that whatever lies ahead, will be faced with determination, strength, and courage.

“ A HUGE THANK YOU to the entire Eastern Cape Community, FGASA, all our Ulovane students and family for their continuous support, encouragement, love and kindness!”, exclaimed Candice.
