Recognised as one of the leading events in the guiding industry, it highlights the critical role that professional guides play in delivering world-class safari experiences.

The 2026 SGOTY competition will be hosted at Amani Safari Camp, part of the Klaserie Drift collection, situated within the exclusive Klaserie Private Nature Reserve. Renowned for its understated luxury, immersive bush setting, and exceptional wildlife encounters, Amani Safari Camp offers an intimate and authentic safari experience. Nestled within one of South Africa’s most pristine wilderness areas, the camp provides the perfect backdrop for a competition that celebrates excellence in guiding.

Founded in 2011, Safari Guide of the Year has grown into one of the most respected platforms for recognising guiding excellence in Southern Africa. Reflecting on this journey, founder Mike Karantonis shared:

“This year, it was an incredible experience to see that SGOTY was something that even experienced guides had reached as a goal to attend. It showed me that SGOTY has started to take its place in the industry and serve its purpose. Everything takes time, but purpose always finds its place.”

Each year, SGOTY selects a group of outstanding finalists who represent the highest standards in guiding across Southern Africa.
These individuals are evaluated across a range of disciplines, including:
Track and sign identification, Birding slide and sound knowledge, Guided safari & walk, Storytelling, FGASA Advanced Rifle Handling, Professionalism & Hospitality, Guides Photographic experience.

The competition is designed not only to test technical ability, but also to celebrate the unique qualities that define exceptional guides. At its core, SGOTY is about more than competition. It is about elevating the guiding profession! Guides are at the forefront of Africa’s tourism industry, shaping visitor experiences, supporting conservation efforts, and acting as ambassadors for the natural environment. Events such as SGOTY play an important role in promoting professional standards, recognising excellence and serving as an inspiration to the next generation of guides.

The 2026 event promises to deliver an exciting and dynamic programme, with finalists competing in a world-class natural setting that reflects the beauty and diversity of African landscapes. Anticipation is building across the industry as stakeholders, partners, and the broader guiding community prepare for this prestigious event. SGOTY is made possible through strong collaboration between industry partners, sponsors, and organisations committed to advancing the guiding profession.

Through these partnerships, the event continues to grow in impact and reach, reinforcing the importance of skills development, mentorship, and recognition within the sector.
