It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Sharon Haussmann, a towering figure in South African conservation and a beloved leader in the Greater Kruger landscape.

Sharon served as the CEO of the Greater Kruger Environmental Protection Foundation (GKEPF) and Chairperson of the Balule Private Nature Reserve. Her leadership was instrumental in pioneering collaborative anti-poaching strategies and spearheading the ambitious rewilding of 120 southern white rhinos into the Greater Kruger area—a project that stands as one of the most significant conservation undertakings of our time.

Beyond her executive roles, Sharon was a scientist and a passionate field researcher. Her fascination with hyenas led her to spend over 3,000 hours observing them in the wild, culminating in the publication of two scientific papers. In 2004, she was recognized as South Africa’s Female Farmer of the Year, reflecting her deep commitment to sustainable land stewardship.

Sharon’s impact extended into the guiding community as well. She was one of the earliest and most dedicated supporters of the Safari Guide of the Year competition. Long before major sponsors like Ruggedwear became involved, Sharon personally ensured that finalists were equipped with quality apparel and gear, demonstrating her unwavering belief in the importance of mentorship and professional excellence in guiding.

Her legacy is one of courage, compassion, and collaboration. Sharon was not only a conservationist but also a mentor, a friend, and a force for good in the wilderness. Her passing leaves a void in the conservation world, but her vision and dedication continue to inspire all who are committed to protecting our natural heritage.

We would like to extend our most sincere condolences and sympathies to Sharon’s family, friends, colleagues and all those who were touched by her incredible legacy, gracious actions and unwavering dedication to the protection of our wildlife.

May your light, continue to guide us, may your legacy continue to inspire us. Rest in peace, Sharon.
