CULTURE GUIDING QUALIFICATIONS

The culture guiding qualifications are not yet available but will be available through FGASA in the near future

CULTURE GUIDE L1

The guide who attains the FGASA Level 1 Culture guiding qualification will be able to create, design and conduct a short local tour with an emphasis on cultural heritage resources that will inform and entertain visitors. Moreover, the guide will have a basic knowledge of the rich and diverse South African cultural heritage and a general knowledge of the prominent cultural centres within the region in which he/she operates
At this level the guide:
  • Is operating as a culture site guide in a limited capacity but is in the process of development.
  • A Cultural Site usually refers to a particular cultural centre, museum, village, historical monument and any other cultural heritage site that may be of particular interest. A culture guide at this level may be operating as a competent guide in a number of different sites.
  • Has the basic knowledge considered essential to register and legally conduct a limited guided culture experience as a FGASA culture guide Level 1 (NQF3).
  • Has been declared competent against the requirements of the FGASA Culture guide Level 1 theoretical and practical assessment.
  • Has a valid, up-to-date recognised First Aid certifica


HOW DO I GET A FGASA CULTURE GUIDE LEVEL 1 QUALIFICATION?

Once you have become an applicant member of FGASA you can apply to write the FGASA Culture Guide Level 1 theory examination.
Payment for the theory examination should be made to FGASA in the same manner as the FGASA fees.  Application and payment for the theory exam can also be made at the same time as your FGASA membership application payment.
Once you have been declared competent (passed) for the FGASA Culture guide level 1 theory examination you can apply to be practically assessed.
The practical assessment for the Culture guide Level 1 qualification is carried out by a registered FGASA assessor in a guiding area of your choice.  You will need to take the assessor on a guided cultural experience in a limited geographical area (with or without paying clients), preferably with clients.
The practical Assessment will be explained to you in detail by your assessor in the pre-assessment brief.  The assessor will make sure that you know what you will be assessed on in order that you can prepare yourself for this assessment. 
(Payment for your practical assessment is done directly to the assessor and does not come via the FGASA office.
Once you have been declared competent for the Culture guide Level 1 practical assessment you will have attained the FGASA Culture Guide Level 1 Qualification.  


WHAT LEARNING MATERIALS DO I NEED FOR THE CULTURE GUIDE LEVEL 1 QUALIFICATION?

The following learning materials are compulsory:
  1. The FGASA Level 1 Culture guide Learner Support Pack & Workbook
  2. The FGASA Culture Guide Training Manual (When available)
Recommended books to improve you own knowledge:
  1. The latest edition of “The South Africa Year book”
  2. Any relevant learning material, books, brochures, etc on the particular cultural Sites you are operating in as a guide.


CULTURE GUIDE L2

The guide who attains the FGASA Culture guiding Level 2 qualification will have a general knowledge of the rich and diverse South African cultural heritage and a specific knowledge of significant cultural sites within the province in which he/she operates.
The guide who attains this qualification will be able to research, design and conduct a cultural experience of varying duration.
At this level the guide:
  • Is operating as a Culture site guide in an advanced capacity but is in the process of further development.
  • Has intermediate knowledge considered essential to register and legally conduct a guided cultural experience as a FGASA culture guide Level 2 (NQF4).
  • Has been declared competent against the requirements of the FGASA Culture guide Level 2 theoretical and practical assessment.
  • Has a valid, up-to-date recognised First Aid certifica

CULTURE GUIDE L3

The FGASA Level 3 (NQF5) culture guiding qualification will consist of a number of modules that are made up out of the following two unit standards:
  • Conduct an advanced guided cultural experience through the rural areas of South Africa.
  • Conduct an advanced guided cultural experience through the South African urban environment.

Section 1: Conduct an advanced guided cultural experience through the rural areas of South African
The guide who attains this aspect of the FGASA Level 3 Culture Guiding qualification will have a substantial overview of the rich and diverse South African rural cultural heritage, an advanced insight into the historical and other factors that shaped it and the distinct and unique features of those selected rural cultural sites within which he/she operates while conceptualising, researching, designing, conducting and concluding a national diverse cultural experience that includes interesting and insightful commentary on diverse and interesting rural cultural sites which can be expected to include indigenous buildings, agriculture, animal husbandry, lifestyle, art and craft, ceremonies, hunting and fishing pursuits, gathering and harvesting of local resources, transport, beliefs, customs and traditions.

Modules for this part of the qualification will be based on the following information and as a culture guide you will understand and be able to:
  • Demonstrate an advanced knowledge and understanding of South Africa’s rich and diverse rural cultural heritage and the historical factors that shaped it
  • Identify and establish the needs, limitations, interests and expectations of a target group of tourists wishing to experience rural culture on a national level
  • Design and create a tour itinerary which includes significant, geographically dispersed rural cultural attraction
  • Conduct a national tour incorporating a selection of significant rural cultural site
  • Interpret rural cultural sites at an advanced level, with sensitivity and insight
  • Conclude the tour effectively with a reflection on their own performance, and complete an insightful report

Section 2: Conduct an advanced guided cultural experience through the South African urban environment
The guide who attains this aspect of the FGASA Level 3 Culture Guiding qualification will have a substantial overview of the rich and diverse South African urban cultural heritage, an advanced insight into the  historical and other factors that shaped it  and the distinct and unique features of those selected urban cultural sites within which he/she operates while being able to conceptualise, research, design, conduct and conclude a national diverse cultural experience that includes interesting and insightful commentary on diverse and interesting urban cultural sites.
Modules for this part of the qualification will be based on the following information and as a culture guide you will understand and be able to:
  • Demonstrate an advanced knowledge and understanding of South Africa’s rich and diverse urban cultural heritage and the historical factors that shaped it
  • Identify and establish the needs, limitations, interests and expectations of a target group of tourists wishing to experience urban culture on a national level
  • Design and create a tour itinerary which includes significant, geographically dispersed urban cultural attraction
