There exists a position for a Field Guide at Bushmans Kloof. The candidate will take guests out on a morning Rock Art Drive and an evening Nature Drive. The candidate will also have hosting duties in the evening and arrange a variety of activities for guests. Candidates must be highly presentable and have excellent interpersonal skills.

Candidates must have the following:

FGASA Level 1

Valid PDP

Valid First Aid

Valid DEAT registration – Western Cape

At least 1-2 years Field Guide experience in a Lodge environment.

Knowledge of Fynbos and endemic game of the Western Cape

Knowledge of Bushmans Rock Art would be preferable.

Opportunity for Permanent and Contract Guiding positions in a Big 5 nature reserve.

You will be responsible for delivering an interpretive safari experience for guests that will exceed all their expectations.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities:
  • Taking guests on game drives and/or walks daily delivering an interpretive safari experience.
  • Responsible for the safety and well-being of guests in your care and must make the guest stay as comfortable as possible, thus exceeding expectations.
  • Coordinating and delivering safari activities for all age groups and nationalities.

Leading 5* Lodge situated on a private concession within Addo  NP is looking for a passionate and hardworking, qualified FGASA guide to join the team.

Requirements:  FGASA 1/2, 

Back-up trails, 

ARH, 

Rifle Competency certificate (SAPS - white card), 

Valid First aid certificate (min Level 1), 

PDP license, 

CATHSSETA certificate at relevant NQF level,

DEAT registered,

(Any tertiary conservation qualifications an advantage).

Duties include, but not limited to the following:

-Conduct memorable and informative Game drives and bush walks in Big Five area,

-Responsibility of the safety and well-being of guests,

-Hosting of guests and night duty (camp is unfenced – guides rotate night duty which involves walking guests back to their rooms after dinner),

-Bush clearing and road maintenance,

-Transfers of guests and staff when required,

-Take responsibility of general vehicle upkeep and maintenance,

-Conducting research projects in affiliation with SANParks,

-Take part in training,

-Uphold National Park conservation practices.

Skills and Characteristics: 

Passionate, Hard-working, team player, reliable, of sober habits, honest, enthusiastic and willing to give guests more than just a ‘Big Five’ experience, but also to convey a conservation and cultural message. Candidates for this position should be passionate about conservation, enjoy working with people and sharing knowledge.

1-2 years experience in 5* an advantage,

Computer literacy skills including Excel, Word, Power point, 

4x4 and off-road driving experience 

Must be fluent in English, spoken and written.

Position includes accommodation, uniform and meals on duty.

Salary R4500-R6000 depending on experience.

Work cycle 25 days on, 7 days off.

FIELD GUIDE (JOHANNESBURG/KRUGER)

Safari operator requires permanent FGASA level 1 guides to conduct guided vehicle safaris in National Parks and in a big 5 environment, host clients, assist with minor vehicle maintenance where needed, assist with daily operations and collect and drop off clients at airport. This is a live in position.

· Skills/Requirements:

•            A minimum of 2 years work experience as a field guide.

•            A level 1 FGASA qualification or higher with theory and practical completed.

•            Registered with DEAT and THETA.

•            Minimum First Aid Level 1.

MENTORSHIP TRAILS

The Trails Guide Mentorship Trail, facilitated by experienced Trails Guides, Brenden Pienaar and Wayne Te Brake, take place in the Timbavati Private Game Reserve over a period of 3 Nights and 4 Days.

The Trail takes a maximum of 6 participants, ensuring more time up front for each participant, and more personal attention from mentors.

The Mentorship Trail is a “primitive” activity, with everything needed for the duration of the trail carried in your backpack. 3 Nights and 4 days will be spent walking and sleeping out in the Timbavati bush with no support in the form of a set camp or vehicle. 

Nights will be spent sleeping in the open, around a fire, with each participant taking turns at “watch duty”.

A minimum of 24 hours of walking time will be logged over the duration of the trail. 

Encounters are less easy to predict, however the Timbavati region is known for its’ high concentrations of Big Game which we will actively track and seek out.

Although the primary objective is to log hours and encounters that go towards the Trails Guide Qualification, we will also focus on the ethos of Trails Guiding as well as bush skills such as tracking, finding water, selecting campsites, etc.

The meeting point is at “The Bushpub” (Outside Timbavati Control Gate) at 11:00 on day of departure.

The Trail will conclude at “The Bushpub” at 12:00 on day 4. 

TRAIL COST

ZAR 2890 per person plus a Conservation fee of ZAR 200.

WILDLIFE MONITORING AND CONSERVATION PROGRAMME LOOKING FOR A GUIDE/RANGER

We are looking for a passionate and hardworking Guide/Ranger for a work opportunity in our wildlife monitoring and conservation volunteer programme. The guide won't only guiding, but he/she will develop research, organization and analysis skills. The main objective is to track and collect data on Lions, Rhinos, Leopards, Elephants, Cheetahs, Hyenas and provide reports and ID kits of these key species for the Park in which we are based. Volunteers who join our project will help us in this matter. Conservation work is also a priority to us.

The main activities in our programme:

- Game Drives to monitor animals
- Reserve management activities
- Data analysis and Reports
- Creation of ID Kits
- Marketing

Requirements:
  • FGASA Level 1 (Theory and Practical completed)
  • SASSETA rifle competency certificate and government certificate
  • ARH preferable
  • Valid DEAT registration
  • Valid PDP license
  • Valid First Aid certificate
  • Previous experience as Field Guide or in similar research and monitoring environment will be an advantage
  • Computer literacy skills including Excel, Word, Power point, Mapping programme
  • Fluent in English, spoken and written
  • 4x4 and off-road driving experience 
  • Motivated and with a passion for conservation, willing to work hard and to share knowledge with volunteers

KAMBAKU SAFARI LODGE****: IN SEARCH FOR QUALIFIED FIELD GUIDES -NAMIBIA

As one of Namibia’s leading suppliers for wildlife and horseback safari holidays we are in search for qualified and experienced Field Guides.

Tasks

• Guiding groups in the bush savannah on foot or in safari vehicle

• Conduction wildlife courses (bush training) for guests; prepairing and developing teaching materials like displays, hand-outs, charts etc.

• Prepairing and accompanying special guest activities (e.g. bush breakfasts, sundowners, accompanying overnight stays in the Bush Camp)

• Hosting guests also before and after wildlife activities, e.g. conversations at the lodge, at dinner-time, at the fireplace

• Prepairing, accompanying and looking after guests as personal guide and field guide (24/7) in multi-day stays at Kambaku’s private Safari Camp

• Looking after the equipment, e.g. prepairing and cleaning safari vehicles, maintaining hiking paths and look-outs

• Responsibility of the wildlife activities in the game reserve and developing new offers

Job Requirements

• Minimum qualification: FGASA Field Guide (NQF2) or relevant study at university

• at least 2 years of experience in full day safaris as well as hosting in the evenings

• Pedagogical skills to run eco training sessions for guests

• Languages: English fluently, German and/or French advantageous 

• Driving license, PDP or Namibian citizenship mandatory
