THE SYLLABUS FOR SKS(WILD FLOWERS) QUALIFICATION

SKS wild flower guides are guides who are operating as a field guide specializing in guided wild flower experiences. The Wild flower guide has already attained a FGASA level 3 field guiding qualification. The objective of this qualification is to equip existing guides with the skills required to conduct a wild flower experience through the natural environment. |
MODULE 1 CLASSIFICATION OF FLOWERS

The objectives On completion of this module you will:
- Know which kingdom flowers fall into
- Know the desions of the major flower families occurring in South Africa
|
MODULE 2 FLOWER MORPHOLOGY AND STRUCTURE
|
The objectives On completion of this module you will:
- Know the different leaf arrangements encountered in wild flower
- Know the different leaf margins encountered in wild flower
- Know the different types of flowers and their component
|
MODULE 3 PLANT PHYSIOLOGY
|
The objectives On completion of this module you will:
- Have an understanding of the process of photosynthesi
- Have an understanding of plant respiration
- Be able to label a diagrammatical representation of a leaf
- Be able to label a chloroplast
- Know the different pigments, their resulting colours and their function in flower
- Know the major toxins found in plant

MODULE 4 PLANT REPRODUCTION
|
The objectives On completion of this module you will:
- Be able to identify the different components and explain the function of the androecium and gynoecium
- Have an understanding of meiosis and mitosi
- Know the different agents used by flowers to ensure pollination
- Be able to explain the development of seeds in plants

MODULE 5 SEED TYPES, DISPERSAL AND ASSOCIATION WITH OTHER PLANTS

The objectives On completion of this module you will:
- Know the different agents for seed dispersal
- Know which plants use which methods of ensuring dispersal of their seeds
- Have an understanding as to what agents prevent successful dispersal of seeds
- Have an understanding of what is required to ensure successful germination of seeds
- Understand different associations of plants including parasitism, commensalism and mutualism

MODULE 6 CARNIVOROUS PLANTS

The objectives On completion of this module you will: - Know the methods of feeding and prey attraction of carnivorous plant
- Know examples of carnivorous plants and their prey capture methods

MODULE 7 MEDICINAL PREPARATIONS AND USES
|
The objectives On completion of this module you will: - Know what parts of plants are used for medicinal purpose
- Know the different preparation methods used for extracting medicinal propertie
- Know examples of plants that have medicinal uses and what ailments they are used to treat.
